A Design Approach for Tangible User Interfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tangible interfaces allow physical control and representation of digital information. When designing such interfaces one needs to take into consideration the potential conflicts between the hardware of the artifact and the form of the user control. The design problem is a search for an appropriate fitness (or effortless coexistence) between these two aspects. This problem makes tangible interface design different from the traditional graphical interface design. In this paper we present an approach to aid the design of tangible interfaces based on the desired fitness. We investigate the potential conflicts of tangible interaction by addressing the fitness problem and propose a set of guidelines (in the form of eight questions) that help by defining the boundaries of the electro-mechanics (hardware) and ergonomic design space, identifying the nature of tangible interaction for various sub-tasks and finally fitting the various components of the electro-mechanics and physical-ergonomics of the artifact to provide a component level fitness. This component level fitness can form the basis for the final form of the tangible interfaces.

Collaboration with Tangible Augmented Reality Interfaces
We describe a design approach, Tangible Augmented Reality, for developing interfaces for supporting face-to-face collaboration. By combining Augmented Reality techniques with Tangible User Interface elements, we can create interfaces in which users can interact with spatial data as easy as real objects. Tangible AR interfaces remove the separation between the real and virtual worlds and so enha...

Developments in digital design workbenches that combine Augmented Reality (AR) systems and tangible user interfaces (TUIs) on a horizontal display surface provide a new kind of physical and digital environment for collaborative design. The combination of tangible interaction with AR display techniques change the dynamics of the collaboration and have an impact on the designers’ perception of 3D...

متن کاملEvaluating tangible objects for multimodal interaction design
The design of applications with multimodal interfaces currently implies complex handcrafting by interface experts, lack of compliance with industry standards of cost effectiveness, maintenance and user focus such as those achieved by the current User-Centered Design methods. This paper presents an initial step towards a design by-example approach, whereby the end-user’s multimodal preferences f...
متن کاملModels and Mechanisms for Tangible User Interfaces
Current human-computer interface design is dominated by the graphical user interface approach, where users interact with graphical abstractions of virtual interface devices through a few general-purpose input “peripherals.” The thesis develops models and mechanisms for “tangible user interfaces” – user interfaces which use physical objects, instruments, surfaces, and spaces as physical interfac...
